CRUISE SHIP HIGHLIGHTS
The bed was large and the balcony was a nice touch, but we were disappointed by the single electric outlet. Unfortunately, the lack of air circulation and restricted space mixed with smoking makes the environment very unpleasant for non-smokers. It’s worth mentioning that these aren’t necessarily BAD Cabins, they just may have some noise from above. We strongly recommend any passenger looking to book a “Suite” class stateroom on the NCL Dawn to use a qualified travel agent! These cabins are so incredibly unique across the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet, that it would be helpful to have the insight of someone who works in the industry and knows these rooms well. The staff on the Dawn seem to be more seasoned making them friendlier and more capable than cruises we’ve been on since the cruise industry has restarted.

All of these items take about an hour to prepare and are charged separately. Other than that, you can get Pizza, Burgers, Salads, Sandwiches, Desserts and special dishes for kids. Venetian's dinner menu is the same as Aqua's and changes daily.

The Dawn is a particularly good choice for families looking for a cruise out of the New England area, given its wide range of family-friendly on-board activities and lively deck-top pool areas. Operated by the same line, the Norwegian Dawn and Norwegian Epic have a lot in common, including a number of identical restaurants and bars. That said, the Norwegian Epic is a far larger, more amentity-filled ship, and it's also newer in a world where newness matters.

There's also a pecan pie served with chocolate ice cream and caramel liqueur on the menu that we found a bit disappointing. The pecan pie itself was done well, but the caramel liqueur was not a good choice as it did not pair well with the chocolate ice cream or the pie. The plate contained a single piece of fish and some fries that should have been marinated with vinegar, but tasted like regular fries (to be fair, there is a bottle of vinegar on the table). On the side was a cup of tartar sauce and a green something, supposedly pea-puree, that tasted awful.

There is a choice of cheese cake, strawberry pound cake, and chocolate cake, which is the same brownie-like, flourless cake you get in the main dining rooms. There's a choice of different fruits, juices, breads, yogurts, cereals, and preserves. Other drinks, including coffee and tea, are also available. The Garden Café is the only buffet you will find on the Dawn. It offers breakfast from 5.30 am to 11.30 am, lunch from 12 pm to 3 pm and dinner from 5 pm to 9.30 pm. On the menu are eggs benedict, fresh fruits, baked potatoes, sandwiches, sausages, humus, and salads – and even soft ice.
Norwegian Dawn offers a number of sun deck areas where you’ll find lounge chairs to sit in the sun. The pool areas are crowded on sea days—unless the ship encounters bad weather. NCL offers water and soda packages with unlimited fountain soda or water for $6.25 per person per day. Juices are also available and for breakfast Garden Café offers fresh grape, orange, and apple juice. Norwegian offers a dining room wine package on embarkation day and you can pre-order a bottle of wine. Beer can be bought in a bucket six for the price of five.
We especially appreciated matinee shows on sea days that spotlighted Second City comedians and the onboard magician, and the use of the Bliss Lounge, atrium and pool deck as secondary venues for evening events. Embarkation in Cape Town was chaotic with no NCL staff in evidence in the area where passengers were waiting to be called forward. It took us over 90 minutes to be processed and to get on the ship. Our cabin on Deck 9 forward was clean and comfortable but we didn't get to see our cabin steward until the next day.
The living room is furnished with a sitting area, couches, easy chairs, a dining table, and a coffee bar. The balcony provides two padded wicker loungers and a drinks table. On one side is the master bedroom, separated from the closet by a curtain, and on the other side is a large bathroom with double sinks, a shower stall, a toilet behind a door, and a whirlpool tub with a window. Some find the master bed area a bit enclosed when the curtains are drawn, but the abundance of space more than compensates for this minor inconvenience. The two Garden Villas on Deck 14 are the most luxurious accommodations on Norwegian Dawn, and they are accessible only by keycard.
Aqua is one of the ship’s two main dining rooms, serving a menu that changes daily. Le Bistro's dinner is delicious and keeps up with expectations. As a complimentary amuse bouche, we got a salmon spread with olives and toasted baguette. The mussels in Pernod-cream sauce were excellent, and for the more adventurous gourmets Le Bistro offers escargot with a garlic-herb crust.
When you want some "me" time, look no further than Mandara Spa®. Relax with a hot-stone massage, one of over 50 specialty treatments offered. At our onboard spas, treatments range from the classic to the luxurious. Let our pampering professionals soothe and rejuvenate you with facials, massages, acupuncture and a full menu of services. Smoking is allowed in cabins, on cabin balconies, in the ship's casino, along the promenade deck and at the pool bar.
Prices range from $119 for a La Therapie HydraIift facial to a five-session acupuncture therapy for $599, excluding an 18% service charge/tip. Norwegian offers several specials throughout a voyage, wherein several treatments are put into a package (different options for women and men) and offered for a fraction of the original price. The coffee costs a $1.50 a cup and even though they supposedly use a special roast it didn’t taste any better than the complimentary coffee served at the Venetian or Garden Café. They do have an espresso machine for fancy drinks, however, and sell all kinds of cakes in the afternoon. The dry dock makeover of the ship, which took place in May 2011, brought about extensive renovations, especially in public areas, suites and restaurants. New are the the Brazilian restaurant Moderno Churrascaria and the addition of a Deluxe Owner's Suite and Family Suites.
The design of the sushi bar is a fun one, with a motorized conveyor belt that carries sushi to diners. The sushi chef periodically puts little plates with two pieces of sushi on the belt, and they arrive right in front of you. The Sushi & Sashimi Bar is a silver chrome block with bar stools and the conveyor belt running the perimeter.
Also like a diner, it's open 24/7, serving up breakfast and comfort food. Teppanyaki is a style of Japanese cuisine that uses iron griddles or grills to cook food to an audience of guests – and it is a really fun experience. Right in front of everybody, the chefs toss their spatulas and knifes, make eggs "disappear" into their hat, shape the fried rice into a fish while cooking the rest of the meal. Reservations are highly recommended, as this restaurant is popular. The restaurant is open from 5.30 pm to 10.30 pm and costs $25 extra. On TV you can watch several news and information channels, as well as two movie channels.Ten restaurants, several bars, and numerous cafes give passengers a wide selection of food options.
