Norwegian Dawn Cabins & Staterooms on Cruise Critic

Aft-facing penthouses on decks 8, 9, and 10 are slightly smaller, measuring 365 to 411 square feet, with 78- to 123-square-foot balconies. Most penthouses can sleep three people, while a few can accommodate four. Penthouse suites come with a walk-in closet, living area with a couch, coffee table, and chair, as well as a small dining table with four chairs.

Overall, we were very satisfied with the food and the service at Teppanyaki and would definitely recommend trying it. Teppanyaki is a Japanese-style restaurant with great food. The waffles were a little hard, but if you put enough maple syrup on them, they'll soften.

Norwegian Dawn Review

While nearly a decade old, the Dawn has just emerged from an extensive overhaul in dry dock that, among other things, brought 58 additional cabins (nearly half of which were new suites). It's a good vessel on which to bring your whole family, have a reunion or just hang out with friends, as long as you're not looking for a formal environment. The change didn't affect the staterooms' deck locations or cabin numbers. Think of it as your travel companion, helping you experience an unforgettable cruise vacation every step of the way. In-Room Dining Overview

Garden Café is also the only place where you can get fresh orange, grape, or apple juice. It looks and feels like a regular buffet in the Garden Café. There are isles between buffet and tables, where you can get drinks. At the front side is a little area just for kids, where they have their own little buffet and tables to sit at. Unlike the rest of the kids areas, adults can get into this one. If you over-eat during your main course and want something light for dessert, there is a lemon sorbet that fits the bill perfectly -- very tasty with a lemony essence that is present but not too overpowering.

While built for two, many of the standard Oceanview and Balcony cabins on the Norwegian Dawn can accommodate a third passenger while a few cabins can accommodate a fourth passenger. In recent years the hard upsell and eyewatering prices have made this treat less pleasant. There is nothing like having an overpriced 90-minute massage to be rattled out of your zen state by someone trying to sell you creams and serums that you don’t need or want. For limited mobility cruisers, the Norwegian Dawn offers 26 wheelchair-accessible cabins across every category. (We heard several tales of the elevators themselves getting stuck between floors, as well.) The most heard -- and experienced -- complaint was bathrooms that were out of order or in dire need of cleaning. In 2020, NCL recategorized fleetwide the Mini-Suite cabin category, renaming it to "Club Balcony Suite" and adding free perks.

These are marketed by NCL as “The Largest Suites at Sea”. These expansive 6,694-square-foot cabins consist of three bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and enormous two-story outside deck areas. They can comfortably sleep seven people, providing more space than one could possibly need. The individual bedrooms vary in size and come with impressive bathrooms and closet space. Two bedrooms have king-sized beds and whirlpool tubs, while the third bedroom has a queen-sized bed, a standard bathtub, and a shower. The Garden Villas also boast private outdoor deck areas with whirlpools, lounge chairs, top-of-the-ship sunbathing decks, and steam rooms.

Not to mention the floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open to a private balcony for the whole family to enjoy. These mid-ship staterooms can accommodate up to three guests, with two lower beds that convert into a queen-size bed and a convertible sofa to sleep one more. Also includes a sitting area and floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open to a private balcony.

The apple pie, however, was really not good at all; it was neither cold nor warm, the crust soggy. Venetian's lunch menu is a good alternative to the buffet in the Garden Café. The stuffed portabello mushroom was good, but a little dry at the edges. Our angus burger was well prepared and the onions and tomatoes gave it a little extra flavor. Unfortunately, our New York strip was almost well done, instead of medium rare, which was what we asked for. For breakfast you can get omelets, pancakes, eggs and bacon, waffles and eggs benedict.

That said, we give high marks to Le Bistro, the French eatery, and the Japanese Teppanyaki restaurant. The oceanview rooms are smallish and most of the room is taken by the queen-size bed. On the right side is the tiny bathroom, and on the left a closet and storage space. At the end of the closet is a little vanity with mirror, along with the only 110-volt plug in the room. The Balcony Stateroom has a very comfortable queen-size bed. There is a sofa beside it that can be used as a spare bed.

Oddly enough, we thought the food tasted a little better at Aqua even though the two menus were the same and come from the same kitchen. We suspect the smaller size of the restaurant may result in faster delivery of dishes from kitchen to table, resulting in turn in a higher quality experience. One of the things that guests often ask about is the dress code on board the ship. The good news is that Norwegian Dawn has a relaxed dress code for most of the public areas of the ship, allowing guests to enjoy their holiday in comfort, in line with their “Freestyle” Branding. However, Le Bistro does have a policy that includes no shorts, torn jeans, flip flops.

Standard cabins are on the small side, but can easily accommodate two people. Add in a third or fourth, either by bunk bed or pullout sofa, and you'll start to feel the squeeze. Storage is plentiful with a closet that offers both hanging space and wide shelves, three drawers of a suitable size for clothing and a few high shelves. While no longer one of the biggest cruise ships at sea, this still is a large ship, especially if this is your first time on a cruise. Although the signage is everywhere, it is not very descriptive – and some descriptions are plain wrong. When we were on the Dawn it was still being refurbished, along with the meeting rooms and the Cinema.

The final insult was that we had paid £204 for trips in Gambia which were cancelled but the refund was paid in cash in US dollars so we now need to exchange this at a cost to us. There were some good points like the fresh rolls at dinner in the evening, the fun of the Japanese Teppanyaki restaurant and the interesting people we met. The dining and housekeeping staff were great but I think the management staff of the ship were lacking.

Having it separate from the main pool is pretty smart, keeping kids occupied in a different wet area. If you’re planning to embark on an NCL Dawn cruise, there are a few things you should know to help you get the best possible experience. First, you’ll find that the cabins are comfortable and well-appointed, albeit slightly dated and a bit on the small side. The shipboard crowd ranges from toddlers to seniors, with many in the middle range. Norwegian's "Freestyle Cruising" appeals to a mostly unpretentious clientele, and the overall vibe is super-casual and fun-filled.
